Michael Helmrath (geboren 1954) begann nach dem Studium der Fächer Oboe und Dirigieren zunächst eine Karriere als Oboist, die ihn als Solo-Oboist zu den Münchner Philharmonikern und Sergiu Celibidache führte, der ihn als Dirigent erkannte und förderte. So richtete er ihm eine eigene Abonnement-Reihe mit dem 1989 aus den ersten Pulten der Philharmoniker gegründeten Philharmonischen Kammerorchester München ein.

Seitdem erhielt Michael Helmrath Einladungen von in- und ausländischen Orchestern und Theatern (u. a. Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Radio-Philharmonie Hannover, Staatliche Philharmonie Halle, Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Nürnberger Symphoniker, Augsburger Philharmoniker, China National Orchestra Beijing, Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin, Nationaltheater Zagreb, Hans-Otto-Theater Potsdam) und konzertierte erfolgreich in den Metropolen Europas, Asiens und Südamerikas.

Bei der Orchesterakademie des Schleswig-Holstein-Musikfestivals wirkte Michael Helmrath als Assistent von Dirigenten wie Sergiu Celibidache, Leonard Bernstein, Yehudi Menuhin, Dmitri Kitajenko und Semyon Bychkov und dirigierte das Festivalorchester.

Seit 1997 dirigiert Michael Helmrath regelmäßig die Dresdner Sinfoniker, ein junges Orchester, das sich ganz der zeitgenössischen Musik widmet und ambitionierte „crossover“-Projekte veranstaltet.

Michael Helmrath ist seit 1999 Chefdirigent der Brandenburger Symphoniker und wurde 2003 zum Generalmusikdirektor ernannt.

Seit 2006 lehrt er im Fach „Dirigieren“ an der Hochschule für Musik „Hanns Eisler“ in Berlin.

Zahlreiche Rundfunk- und Fernsehmitschnitte sowie CD-Einspielungen dokumentieren seine Arbeit als Dirigent.




Biography


A Michael Helmrath was born in 1954. After studying oboe and conducting, he first began a career as an oboist. This took him as a soloist to the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and Sergiu Celibidache, who recognized and fostered his conducting talent. Sergiu Celibidache introduced a special subscription series for Michael Helmrath and leading members of the philharmonic orchestra who then performed together in the Munich Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra which was founded in 1989.

Since then Michael Helmrath has received invitations from orchestras and theatres at home and abroad (including the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Radio-Philharmonie Hannover, Staatliche Philharmonie Halle, Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Nürnberger Symphoniker, Augsburger Philharmoniker, China National Orchestra Beijing, Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin, Nationaltheater Zagreb, Hans-Otto-Theater Potsdam) and has given successful performances in the major cities of Europe, Asia and South America.

At the Orchestra Academy of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival he acted as assistant to conductors including Sergiu Celibidache, Leonard Bernstein, Yehudi Menuhin, Dmitri Kitajenko and Semyon Bychkov, and conducted the festival orchestra.

Since 1997 Michael Helmrath has been regularly conducting the Dresdner Sinfoniker, a young orchestra dedicated entirely to contemporary music and the performance of ambitious "crossover"-projects.

In 1999 Michael Helmrath became principal conductor of the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra and was appointed musical director in 2003.

He has been teaching conducting at the "Hanns Eisler" Academy of Music in Berlin since 2006.

His work as a conductor is documented by numerous radio and television recordings, and CD productions.
